Your Care
Emergency Care
The KCH Emergency Department is approved for Pediatrics by the State of Illinois. This designation recognizes the clinical expertise of the staff and the availability of pediatric equipment and supplies.
Breastfeeding Services
Breastfeeding not only enhances the bond between mother and baby, it also provides a number of health benefits for both. Our nursing staff follows the guidelines of the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetrics and Neonatal Nurses and the World Health Organization by encouraging mothers to breastfeed. During your stay, a certified lactation counselor offers support as the feeding routine is established. All nursing staff are educated on breastfeeding and available to offer support.
Breastfeeding supplies are available for purchase and breast pumps are available for rental or purchase. Breastfeeding classes are taught by certified lactation counselors. We recommend that first-time moms attend one of these classes to prepare for a successful breastfeeding experience.
Technology and Patient Care
New advancements in technology allow nurses to dedicate more time and attention to patient care.
The KCH OB TraceVue System documents admission records, labor and delivery records, flow charts, discharge and note records, including fetal monitoring for both mothers and their newborns utilizing a computerized charting system. Moms can now take advantage of wireless monitoring that allows them to be out of bed and walking around during labor without cords attached.
All of our suites are set up with OB TraceVue, as well as the nursery. The nurses station is equipped with web-based access to the system and a central monitoring station.
Post Partum Home Visits
This optional free service is offered to all new mothers. With your permission, a registered nurse will visit you and your baby at home within 72 hours after you leave the hospital. The nurse will measure and weigh the baby, offer breastfeeding support, and answer your questions.
A lactation counselor is available by phone after your home visit to answer any questions or concerns that may arise. This service is highly recommended for first-time and breastfeeding moms.
